Privacy Policy
Introduction
Calgary Mediation Services is a division of Shim Law. As part of Shim Law, we adhere to the same privacy principles and policies governing the collection, use, and protection of personal information under Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (“the Act”).
Shim Law recognizes the importance of privacy and the sensitivity of personal information received in the course of our legal and mediation practice. We are committed to maintaining the confidentiality of all client information and complying with our professional and ethical obligations.
The Requirement for Personal Information
To provide legal and mediation services, we may need to collect relevant facts and information relating to your file or consultation. This information allows us to deliver quality service and manage our business operations effectively. This may include personal information about clients and, in some cases, other individuals involved in the matter.
Collection, Use, and Disclosure of Personal Information
Where practical, we collect personal information directly from the individual to whom it pertains. In some situations, we may collect information from other sources when necessary.
We will only collect the personal information necessary for the purposes described above. Under the Act, individuals are deemed to consent to the collection, use, or disclosure of personal information for a specific purpose when it is reasonable to do so.
By engaging Shim Law or Calgary Mediation Services for legal or mediation services, you consent to our collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information as needed to properly advise and assist you.
The Act also allows the collection, use, or disclosure of personal information without consent in specific situations, such as:
When it is clearly in the individual’s interest and consent cannot be obtained in a timely manner;
When it is reasonable for the purposes of an investigation or proceeding;
When the information is publicly available from an authorized source; or
When required or authorized by law.
When collecting, using, or disclosing personal information, we make reasonable efforts to ensure it is accurate and complete. For legal or business purposes, we may retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary.
Third-Party Service Providers
We may partner with trusted third parties to provide specific services such as payment processing or account management. These partners are given only the information necessary to perform their duties and are not permitted to use personal information for any other purpose.
Security of Personal Information
Your personal information is treated as private and confidential by Shim Law and Calgary Mediation Services. We employ security measures to protect personal information from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse.
Please note that while we strive to use secure communication methods, no system is entirely secure. Email is often our preferred method of communication, and unless you instruct us otherwise, we will use standard, unencrypted email for convenience.
Our Website
The only personal information we collect through this website (calgarymediationservices.ca) is what you voluntarily provide, such as your name, phone number, and email address through contact forms.
We do not use cookies or other automated tools to collect personal data. Our website may contain links to external sites. Shim Law and Calgary Mediation Services are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party websites, and we encourage you to review their policies before providing any personal information.
Requests for Access or Correction
You may submit a written request to access or correct your personal information that is under our custody or control. We will respond as permitted by the Act and may charge a reasonable fee as allowed by law.
Access may be limited if disclosure could threaten another person’s safety, reveal confidential information, or violate legal privilege. If corrections are requested, we will either update the information or note that a correction was requested but not made.
